This section is the second of five itineraries presented in the Guide du Routard "ViaRhôna, du lac Léman à la Méditerranée" (February 2019 edition). It is entitled "De Genève à Lyon à travers le sillon alpin".

Marking details : Depending on the area you cross, you'll find different types of signposting with the ViaRhôna logo and EuroVelo 17 identifier. Please note that signage is not yet present on the entire route.

Tricky passages : The Saint-Gingolph - Le Locum section has been equipped with exclusive right-of-way since May 2019.

Between Le Locum and Evian, the route is reserved for seasoned cyclists.

Be careful between Geneva and Seyssel: this section of the ViaRhôna is reserved for hardened and determined cyclists. Its route, topography and motorized traffic make it inadvisable for families and leisure cyclists.

Between Seyssel and Belley, from the pont du Fier to the pont de la Loi, the heavily trafficked D 991 then D 904 roads with their steep gradients call for great caution.
Caution: very tricky section between Virignin and La Balme: 3 km stretch of unmade road with heavy traffic, 1 tunnel on the left bank of the river and 2 others on the right bank, with steep gradients: for expert cyclists only at present.

Between Groslée and La Balme-les-Grottes, from the Lagnieu bridge, take care on the road (no markings).

Between La Balme-les-Grottes and Jons, provisional route on small unmarked roads. Slopes at Hières-sur-Amby. Before Saint-Romain de-Jalionas (on the D 65B), take the Chemin de Peillard, on the right, not very visible. Beware of traffic on parts of the D 55.
  • Services for cyclists
Nearly 130 Accueil Vélo accommodations (campsites, hotels, gîtes, chambres d'hôtes) are located within 5 km of the itinerary, guaranteeing you quality services such as a closed garage for your bike. We strongly recommend that you book your accommodation in advance, especially in tourist areas.
