The church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption in Abondance, once part of the abbey of the same name, was built in the wake of a first place of worship, of which nothing is known.
The current building is the result of several building campaigns, starting at the end of the 12th century, as well as several fires.

Today, only the eastern part of the church can be traced back to the 13th century: this is the developed chevet with seven radiating chapels and an ambulatory surrounding the sanctuary. At the front, the transept dates from the same period and once opened onto a long, wide nave with two or three aisles. However, a serious fire brought it down before 1443....
