A primitive church is mentioned in 1099 in the Genevan register, which asks the priory of St. Paul to serve Maxilly. In 1536, Maxilly was the only parish in the Pays du Gavot to fall "under the sway of the Bernese". It was thus a Protestant enclave in Catholic country.
In 1794, the steeple was razed to the ground and the church stripped of much of its furnishings. The church was completely rebuilt in 1828 in the same style as the old building, with a single nave.
