I tested it for you La Savonnerie de marin

Softly colored soaps, stone walls and wooden furniture adorn the workshop. I’m greeted by Jean-Luc Le Toquin, soap creator since 1989.

“A thousand smells and scents intermingle as you push open the door to this 100% artisanal soap factory.

La Savonnerie

Marinel Soapery

Located in Marin, Savonnerie Marinel was conceived by Jean-Luc Le Toquin. Passionate about craftsmanship for over ten years, Jean-Luc has specialized in the manufacture of natural soaps, derived from reasonable, sustainable agriculture. From body and face soaps to hand soaps and shampoos, Savonnerie Marinel creates quality handmade solid soaps that are gentle on the skin and adapted to individual needs.

A visit to the soap factory

I’d tell you all about the visit from A to Z, revealing all the secrets of saponification and soap design. So I’ll leave a little mystery so that you, in turn, can come and meet him and discover all the secrets of the workshop. Jean-Luc takes me to the second part of the workshop, where he and his son make soaps with multiple virtues.

While his son sets about making an avocado soap, he explains the different saponification methods, the composition of a soap and the necessary or controversial ingredients that make up for it.

  • What are the ingredients?
“To make soap, you need: water, oil and caustic soda. With 3 ingredients, we make soap. End of visit. Goodbye”, says Jean-Luc, before going on to explain the cold saponification method.
  • What is saponification?
“Saponification is the chemical reaction in which a fatty acid (oil or fat) reacts with a base (soda). This reaction produces soap, glycerine and heat. There are two methods of saponification: cold saponification and hot saponification.

The Marinel Soapery method Cold saponification

The workshop uses exclusively cold saponification.

“We use cold saponification. We say ‘cold’ because there’s no heat involved in soap-making. Well… which is a bit wrong, because when you pour caustic soda into water, exothermic heat is generated. It rises to 80-90 degrees. So you need to protect yourself with gloves and goggles when handling caustic soda.

We then wait for the solution to drop to 45 degrees. At this point, we heat the oils in a bain-marie to 40 degrees. The aim is for the two devices to be at the same temperature, plus or minus 40 degrees. Once you’ve done that, the hard part’s over. All that’s left is to blend the mixture with an immersion blender to a mayonnaise-like consistency. This means that the caustic soda, at the right temperature and in the right quantity, starts the chemical process that will transform the oil into soap and glycerine.

This is the beginning of saponification. The process takes around 24 hours. The mixture is placed in a wooden mold, where it first hardens, then generates heat, goes through a gel phase before hardening again to produce soap and glycerine. After 24 hours, 80% of the caustic soda has disappeared. The soap is left to cure for 4 to 6 weeks, so that no traces of caustic soda remain. After 6 weeks, the soap is ready for use.

Avocado soap

It’s my turn to get involved! I press the button to start the machine. The soap comes out in the shape of the die. When the soap gets close to the green wire, I stop the machine. Next, I cut at the entrance to the die, then in half in the middle, using the ruler.
The two blocks are then placed on the machine for gentle cutting. I take a bar of soap and stamp the word “avocado” on it, using the device where the soaps can be personalized ad infinitum. Finally, the soap is stamped “Savon Marinel”.

Soap holds no secrets for me!

And now it’s your turn to discover this beautiful Savonnerie Marinel, where Jean-Luc will reveal all the mysteries and history of soap.
