Discovering the Chablais World Geopark With Cédric Cordonnier

  • What is a Geopark?
A Geopark is a site or area of outstanding international geological interest. It’s a label awarded by UNESCO. There are 9 in France and 147 worldwide. There are no measures to protect the listed area, but there are many initiatives to promote the Geopark and make its riches known to the public.
  • What are the special features of the Chablais Geopark?
All the Alps have geological riches. The Chablais region, at the north-western end of the Alps, is home to layers (nappes de charriage) that have travelled all the way here, giving it great geological diversity in a small area.
  • An itinerary or activity to recommend?
The Geopark’s itineraries and activities are designed for all ages. Fascinating for parents and children alike, they provide a better understanding of geological history. There’s no age limit to being curious and learning! While the activities supervised by mediators obviously provide a wealth of information, stories and anecdotes, it’s also perfectly possible to follow the planned itineraries unsupervised, and learn from the explanatory panels.
  • Which of the 7 Leman Mountains Explore sites is your favorite?
I have a soft spot for the Bise mountain pasture… because it’s my home! Seriously, in addition to its geological history, this place has a very lively present, with flora and fauna that have earned it Natura 2000 status, and a rich pastoral activity.
