GR5: where to start the great Alpine crossing?

The entire GR5 links Rotterdam, the port city of the Netherlands, and Nice, the capital of the Alpes Maritimes. We’ll concentrate here on the “Grande Traversée des Alpes” section, zooming in on the first few days of the crossing, during which you’ll cross the Chablais massif and gaze out over Lake Geneva.

Saint-Gingolph, starting point of the GR5

The Grande Traversée des Alpes begins in Saint-Gingolph, on the shores of Lake Geneva. Straddling the Haute-Savoie and Valais regions of Switzerland, Saint-Gingolph has both French and Swiss nationalities. Before setting off on your hike, we recommend taking a moment to enjoy the gentle waters of the lake.

From Saint-Gingolph, you’ll head up towards the mountains to Novel, the smallest village in Haute-Savoie.

In the heart of the wild mountains, up to the Abondance valley

Make sure you’re well prepared when you leave Saint-Gingolph, as there’s a big climb (1636m) ahead of you to reach the Col de Bise in the Abondance valley. You can also make a detour to the refuge de Bise for refreshments or an overnight stay.

On this stage, you’ll enjoy exceptional views of the Chablais mountains, and will gradually see Lake Geneva fade away as you plunge into the heart of the Alpine valleys.

GR5: from Bise to the Trébentaz refuge

After your first tour of the Chablais mountains and a well-deserved break in the Bise area, it’s time for the next stage. This will take you through the wonderful landscapes of the Abondance valley! From Bise, head for the Mont de Grange reserve, one of the region’s most emblematic peaks. You can stop off at the Trébentaz refuge before continuing your journey towards the Morzine valley, then the Giffre.
