Discover Biodiversity on the Gavot Plateau

Leman Mountains Explore is an area of contrasts. Between the shores of Lake Geneva and the Alps, the Plateau de Gavot forms an entity at the crossroads of lake, urban and mountain influences. A veritable balcony overlooking Lake Geneva, the plateau offers splendid views of the lake, with the peaks on the horizon emerging between meadows and pastures.

Characteristic of the Gavot region

The Gavot region is mainly characterized by a pastoral landscape, dominated by pastures and bordered by oak hedges and other remarkable trees. Bucolic, it’s the ideal place for gentle, contemplative tourism. The communes of Vinzier, Bernex, Saint-Paul-en-Chablais, Thollon-les-Mémises, Larringes, Féternes and Champanges offer distinctive views and features.

The impluvium

The plateau is the impluvium, the natural source of Evian® natural mineral water. A natural infiltration zone, it is here that rain and snow are stored before slowly infiltrating and purifying through the multiple geological strata. The Gavot plateau is one of the most beautiful wetland areas in Haute-Savoie, given the extent of its peat bogs and marshes, and their remarkable biological diversity.

The policy of conserving these wetlands, initiated at an early stage and in collaboration with all the local players, has made this a site that is still preserved, protected by the international RAMSAR convention and promoted by APIEME.

Wetlands

Wetlands play a major role in biodiversity, hydrological regulation, carbon storage and groundwater recharge. A walk along the Maravant Marsh interpretation trail invites you to discover how these habitats function.

Le Pré Curieux, gardens on the shores of Lake Geneva, also offers an opportunity to understand the various ecosystems linked to water and the way wetlands function.

A VTT-FFC-certified site

The Gavot plateau, in addition to being protected by the international RAMSAR convention for wetlands, is a VTT-FFC accredited site.

At your own pace, discover the plateau’s balconny trails by bike, with 16 certified trails of varying levels. From the green setting of Lac Noir to the woods of Larringes, discover the Gavot region and its hilly landscapes.
